Opened in 1840, Nunhead was a fashionable burial ground and popular leisure park for many years but gradually the 52 acre site declined into a wilderness and became vandalised causing the owners to abandon it in 1969. The London Borough of Southwark took possession in 1974. FONC was formed in 1981, with a view to monitoring the Council's plans and has now developed into an association of wide interests. It carries out practical work under licence from the Council. Improvements have been completed as a result of a grant from HLF including the restoration of the chapel, opening up of the crypt, replacing the gates and repairing many monuments. A feature of the cemetery is the Scottish Martyrs Memorial.
