The 24 acre cemetery was established in 1837 by the York Cemetery Company.
Both the grounds and the chapel were designed by James Piggot Prichett.
Following the liquidation of the company in 1966, the cemetery suffered several years of neglect and finally in 1987 the York Cemetery Trust acquired the freehold. Together with the Friends group the Trust has restored the gatehouse and the chapel.
