The
1881 cemetery of 5 acres is owned by Leicester City Council. The
Friends group formed in September 2004. In 2005 four members won medals
from the CSV Volunteer of the Year Award. The Friends supported the
council bid for lottery funding but were disappointed that the
application did not meet with success. Mr Stephen Butt of the Leicester
Chronicler has supported the group with website facilities.

The memorial was the result of 4 years hard work by the committee. Brenda Watts, group historian, did the research which enabled the group to publish a Book of Remembrance.

Though initiated by Dissenters, the cemetery was opened for all of the borough of Leicester burials in 1849. Designed as a place of resort by Hamilton and Medland, it is now managed by Leicester City Council with a view of restoring it as an amenity. In the 30 acres there are 220,000 burials in 40,000 graves. The memorials represent a wealth of local and family history. The Council with the support of the Friends completed a restoration programme following a HLF award.
