The
Plymouth, Stonehouse and Devonport Cemetery Company opened its new
cemetery in 1848, the year of the largest cholera outbreak in Britain.
In its first year in use their were more than 400 cholera related
burials. Originally 18 acres in size, a further 16.5 acres were added
in 1875. The surviving Victorian Gothic style chapel was designed by
J.R. Hamilton and James Medland. The chapel and part of the landscape
is Grade 11 listed. The company went into liquidation and the several
interested parties, Plymouth City Council, the Crown Estates, the MOD
[many of the army and navy graves pre dated the formation of the
Imperial later Commonwealth War Graves Commission], the CWGC and a
group of concerned relatives and supporters of the cemetery met to
discuss the future of the cemetery, As a result a Trust was formed to
run the cemetery and in more recent times a Friends group which
supports the Trust. The Trust is a charitable one with guaranteed
limitation of liability. The cemetery is a member of the Association of
Significant Cemeteries in Europe and has been awarded the Queen's Award
for Voluntary Service in recognition of its splendid efforts in
conserving the cemetery.
