Established in 1839 on a 32 acre site, the cemetery began to decline in the 1880's. Vandalism hastened its decline in the 1970's. Local residents formed Save Abney Park Cemetery in 1974. In 1979 the group successfully persuaded Hackney Council to purchase the cemetery. Then known as the Friends of Abney Park Cemetery, it promoted the creation of a charitable trust to take over the management and the Trust took on a long lease of the cemetery in 1992. Although the council remains as the burial authority with about 25 burials a year, the Trust has ambitious plans including the restoration of the chapel.
 Burials of famous people include

     James Shirley Hibberd, horticulturist

Herbert Campbell, music hall entertainer

William Booth founder of the Salvation Army
